The First Shaman King Mary Sue Litmus Test!
What is a Mary Sue?
Mary Sues (and their counterparts, the Gary Stus) have long been a plague in the Shaman King fandom and why not? The series itself seems to be a breeding ground for Sues, with the endless possibilities of power spirits and such. The Mary Sue is a fan character created by an author, at times a self insert but most of the time, a young female of about the same age as the canon characters who manages to capture the heart of every single male in the series. She happens to be positive and bubbly, often with a troubled past that involves death, rape and one or more canon characters and would cause severe psychological trauma to any normal person. The Sue is perfection; a talented beauty who is a skilled musician, cook and the best in bed despite the fact that she is still a virgin. Since this is the Shaman King reality, the Sue is oftentimes a Shaman with a powerful spirit. Often, the Sue targets Ren and Hao, turning them into horribly OOC fluffy knights in shining armour who will bend over backward to keep her happy. Of course, the Sue also turns other characters OOC and calls any other girl in the series a bitch.

How to score:
Read the questions one by one – with your OC in mind – and for every answer you say “yes” too, make a check mark on a piece of paper or something. When you’re done, add up you marks and check the “scoring system” at the bottom of the page. This will tell what your character scored.
Remember, be truthful, even “well, technically” counts as a “yes”.

Section One: The Name Game

1. Is the character named after you?
2. Is it your penname?
3. Is it your nickname?
4. Is it a name you wish you had?
5. Is the name unusual in any way? (Eg. Unneeded apostrophes, dashes)
6. Japanese sounding even though your character isn't Japanese?
7. Chinese sounding even though your character isn't Chinese?
8. If it is an Asian name, does the word actually exist? (eg. Xiao Mei = Little Beauty)
9. Does the title of your story have anything to do with the character at all? (eg. The Mysterious Shaman, The Story of Weng, Horo and Ren Love Jeni)
10. Is the name a word that normally wouldn't be used as a name? (eg. Sorrow)
11. Does this word have anything to do with a weapon, a gemstone, darkness or mythology?
12. Is the name made up of a bunch of letters you mushed up in your head to sound Asian? (eg. Wi Bing)
13. Does she have an exceptionally long name without reason?
14. Is it unusual for your character's race and ethnicity?

Section Two: Physical Attributes

1. Is the character beautiful beyond all question?
2. Even more than Tao Jun?
3. If the character is female, does she have long beautiful perfect hair?
4. Which does not get in the way of a Shaman fight?
5. And which you describe multiple times in the first chapter alone?
6. Is the character not human?
7. Is the character a hybrid?
8. Of a kitsune/vampire/neko?
9. Is the character the age you want to be?
10. Is the character a teenager/ person in their early twenties?
11. Is the character immortal?
12. Is the character a reincarnated spirit? (Like Hao)
13. If so, is the character connected to Hao in any way?
14. Do one or more of the canon characters find the character attractive?
15. Does this cause them to break away from their canon pair?
16. Does the character have an attractive scar?
17. Do their clothes show off too much skin for no reason?
18. Are they described with such poetic terms as "azure locks" or "sapphire blue eyes"?
19. Does the character's wardrobe include..
-leather
-mostly black
-something you would want to wear but can't
-something you already own
-Hot Topic items
20. Does the character's description include the line "Looks just like [canon character/celebrity] except..."

*Subtract one point if the character...
-is disabled and never gets cured
-is overweight
-is mentally disabled.

Section Three: Personal Traits

1. Is the character a long lost child of two canon characters?
2. Is your character related to any canon character?
3. Was the character adopted/abandoned by their original parents?
4. Was it because the character could see spirits?
5. Does this skill cause them to be bullied/taken advatage of/called a freak?
6. Add points for any of the following that has happened in your character's backstory:
-survivor of a calamity
-last member of their clan
-physically abused (add one more point if it was because they could see spirits)
-sexually abused (add one more point if it was by a canon character)
-illegitimate child
7. Does the character suffer from grief from anything they did in their past?
8. Do the canon characters convince her its not her fault?
9. Were their parents/family members/significant others killed by Hao?
10. Does the character share your religious beliefs?
11. Is the character pagan even though you aren't?
12. Does the character have an exceptionally good singing voice?
13. Do they play a musical instrument extremely well?
14. Are they part of a band?
15. Is the band a team in the Shaman fight?
16. Does the character do what you do? (IE, loves to draw because you draw and is a prodigy at it)
17. Was the character from Hao's time?
18. Was the character mysteriously transported to the Shaman King universe?
19. From the TV?
20. Is the character immediately accepted into Yoh's little band?
21. With Ren's approval from the start?
22. And Anna's approval?
23. Does everyone end up liking the character?
24. Is your character accomplished for their age? (eg. Can play the guitar really really well)
25. Does your character consider their talents/good looks as a curse?
26. Is their history similar to any canon character?
27. Is your character a gender bent version of your favourite canon character? (A female Yoh, a male Jun)

*Immediately add ten points if your character is a goth.

Section Four: Shamanic Powers

For Shaman
1. Is the character's power spirit a cute and cuddly animal who turns out to be really powerful?
2. Can the character manage to pull off 100% unity at the first try?
3. How about an oversoul?
4. And a double medium?
5. Without running out of furiyoku?
6. And controlling more than one power spirit?
7. Is the power spirit an elemental spirit? (Like Hao's Spirit of Fire, only blue so it becomes the spirit of water)
8. Or related to any canon character's power spirit?
9. Is the medium a legendary weapon that no one has ever heard of before?

Section Six: The Real World and Your Character

1. Would you be friends with your character if you met them in real life?
2. Do you think everyone who reads your story should automatically like your character?
3. If someone tells you they don't like your character, do you take it as a personal attack?
4. Do you get defensive when someone calls your character a Mary Sue?
5. Do you try to prove that your character isn't a Mary Sue by citing parts of your story?

Section Seven: The Fiendish Plot

1. Do you introduce your character in the first sentence of your story?
2. When the story is told from the character's point of view...
-Do they use long descriptions about themselves and their clothes? (eg. I wore a sleeveless black tank top with the word bitch written on it which showed off my thin white arms)
-About their weapons?
-About their hair? (eg. I twirled my long shiny ebony hair which fell past my shoulders in a cascading sea of obsidian)
3. Does this go on for a paragraph or so?
4. Does the character meet any of the canon characters and become friends with them instantly?
5. Does the character manage to befriend a villain and reform that villain?
6. Is this character Hao?
7. Does the villain become evil again after the character dies, but retain some last vestige of goodness from his/her interaction with the character, evidenced in one selfless action at the end of the story?
8. Does the character save the life of another character/save the world from total destruction?
9. By dying?
10. Was it the canon character your character was in love with?
11. Is your character wounded in the story?
12. Mortally wounded and nursed back to health?
13. By Ren?
14. Does everyone mourn the death of your character?
15. Even the villains?
16. Is the character fulfilling some sort of prophecy?
17. Is she holier than the Iron Maiden?
18. Does she hold the "only way to stop Hao"?
19. Does she cause canon characters to suddenly go OOC?
20. Does Anna call her a bitch?
21. Does she call Anna a bitch?

23. And get away with it?

-Scoring-
0-15 Your character should be fine at this point. Congratulations. You have a safe OC. Anyone who calls your character a Sue at the moment should look over their definition of Sue.
16-21 Pay attention to your character so they don't end up going to the dark side.
22-30 Already developing some Sue-like tendencies. Maybe your power spirit's a little too strong or you're getting a little too close to Renny-poo.
30+ You might want to consider reworking your OC. I smell a Sue on the loose!
